Classes started this week and I must admit I was a bit overwhelmed. I am taking Sheep Production, Dairy Production, Reproductive and Lactation Physiology, and Plants in Agriculture. So there I sit, a suburbanite sitting in a class filled with students who were raised on dairy and sheep farms. My professors rattle off question at warp speed and those native students whisper back figures with a heavy accent that naturally are common sense to them having grown up managing ruminants and I have NO clue what they said or what it may means. After bitting off all my nails and talking with as many professors and advisors for direction and advice, I finally began to settle in.
Just to make my transition smoother, I have had a wonderful case of bad luck and proceeded to loose my key running through the brush and then panicked when I discovered it costs 250$ to replace. Thankfully my luck is turing around and someone turned it in! The night my keys were found so a couple Kiwis and Leigh (my closest girlfriend here so far) and I went out behind our beautiful campus and had a bon fire and jam session next to the river. I was relieved to find some down to earth friends!
The Massey Manawatu campus is absolutely beautiful, there are sprawling lawns and paths to run, bike or walk on. My residence hall is another story, the painted white cinderblock walls and bars over the windows proved to be ultra comforting (just kidding) but the surrounding area is great! The town and the campus are separated by a big river but the free bus system makes it easy to get downtown quickly. The majority of shops are concentrated around a big town square where there are occasional free concerts and shows. I love exploring downtown and am looking forward to the farmers market on Saturday morning!
