Spring quarter concluded with a typical, stressful 'dead week' and a rather easy finals week. As soon as I knew it, I was packed and on a plane destined to Halifax, Nova Scotia to start my internship on Four Seasons Organic Farm http://www.fourseasonsfarm.ca/ in the little town of Maitland! Check them out, they are incredible people who are doing the most important job in the world - ecological stewardship and helping people find their true direction.
When I landed the internship, I thought to myself 'Solid! I'm going to Nova Scotia!....where exactly is Nova Scotia?'. For those who don't know, Nova Scotia is a peninsula on the eastern sea board of Canada bordering New Brunswick, CA and rather close to Maine. So no, I wasn't freezing cold in the Tundra. Instead, I was working away suckering tomatoes in humid green houses, cutting lettuce, picking edible flowers and culinary herbs, co-managing the kitchen and learning extremely valuable life lessons - like how to go mud sliding at low tide on the Bay of FUNdy, work through tough times as a team, and work...I mean really work, 12 hours a day harvesting and making food for the crew day in and day out for months on end.
The good times were really good, and the hard times were rough, but all in all, the experiences were unforgettable. Crying to Daniel, Fred and Julie singing 'The Gambler and his Bride' at SappyFest (an intimate music festival in Sackville, New Brunswick), weekend trips through the country side, rock climbing with nutty Quebecois friends, learning how to make hollandaise sauce from scratch, learning how to love, playing music in the greenhouse, and enjoying how to be a 'human - being' were times that will always stay with me.
